President Scott Dowds opened the meeting promptly at 12:30. Matt Apodaca provided a thought for the day in lieu of an invocation, reminding us to keep a positive attitude. J Richey led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. Pastor Greg Hickman led us in “Smile”. Twice. Given the tightly packed room, everyone greeted everyone!
Greg Hickman announced visitors and guests: Gary Swank, guest of Blake Smith; Casey Lins, guest of proud Papa Joe (Lins); Beverly Thompson, guest of J Richey; Clayton Hillhouse, guest of son Bob Hillhouse; Jeremy Sulit, guest of Lee Brockett; Ari Manes, visiting us today to see what Rotary is all about; Dan Ouweleen introduced guest of the Club: Brenda Camberos and Julie Kreisler.
President Scott called for announcements. Dan Ouweleen reminded us of the matching program. Those of us already Paul Harris Fellows were advised to pick up an envelope at the front desk, containing particulars about our current PHF status and matching contribution requirements; those new to the Club and not yet Fellows will receive a special mailing. Dan also announced a mixer supporting the Jog-a-thon May 24 from 5:45-7:00PM, location to be determined. Bob Muschek, in his role as program chair, requested our courtesy. Program speakers typically have 25 minutes for their program. On several occasions, Club members have made last-minute presentations, encroaching into time reserved for our guest speakers. Members wanting microphone time are STRONGLY encouraged to coordinate with the Club President who will try to accomodate such requests but without disresepcting our guests. Dick Daybell offered boat owners a courtesy safety check of their boat and announced a boating class at shoreline yacht club starting on June 6. Miko Krisvoy announced our upcoming Top 100 dinners, May 17 for Sunny Hills High School and May 23 for Fullerton High School, Although some Club members have signed up for duty, more volunteers are needed to help prepare, serve, and clean up at each event. Zoot Velasco reminded us that next week’s meeting will be at the Muckenthaler, providing us a sneak peak at the upcoming car show. He also announced that the monthly Chamber of Commerce mixer would be held tonight from 5:00-7:00PM at the Muck.
Our esteemed (and soon to be impeached) President Scott, called our newest member, Meg Crider to the podium. Last week, Meg was inducted, receiving “virtual” plaque, pin, etc. Meg wisely offered to pay her dues in a like manner. With the threat of a “virtual” payment scheme, the necessary induction materials materialized at this meeting. Sorry, Meg, your dues are now payable in real currency!
Scott also announced Memorial Day services May 28 starting at 10:00AM at Loma Vista Memorial Park. Keynote speaker will be Captain Scott Adams, USN. In a geography test, Scott waited patiently for someone to notice that the event was scheduled locally, not at Point Loma Naval Base as initially announced. Astute member Chris Meyer pointed out the error, lest hordes of Rotarians assemble at the wrong coordinates. Head of the class, Chris! Back of the class, Scott.
It is with great sadness that we recognize the loss of one of our most esteemed members, Les Christensen. As previously announced, Dr C passed away a week ago last Sunday. Services will be held Tuesday, May 15 at 11:30AM at St. Andrews Episcopal Church in Fullerton. A reception will follow at the Summit House. The family has asked for donations to the Rotary Club of Fullerton Foundation in lieu of flowers.

Recognition Master Warren Wimer began by honoring Les Christensen’s memory, reminded us of Les’s illustrious career, his military service, and his service to the Fullerton community. Truly, exemplifying “Service Above Self”. Dr C will be missed.

Other recognitions included birthdays: Jon West (fined heavily for our club crooning Happy Birthday in his honor), Julie Kemp, and Dan Kiernan. John Phelp’s wedding anniversary was commemorated. John thanked Dan for his gift, which John donned to display: a sweatshirt bearing the catching slogan: “John is way older than Dan” on the front, and “Older, yet also wiser” on the reverse. John also self-imposed a fine to acknowledge that his better half Kerry was honored by The Good Guys of the Boys and Girls Club for being a "super good guy". With each breath, John was fined until he was encouraged to just throw his entire wallet in the pot. Don’t bother, John, its empty at this point anyway! Wolf Knabe’s birthday was also comemorated by a fine. Warren Wimer announced that he is re-introducing bragging time....Bill Mathy bragged that on May 18 son Jeff, would be bottling his own reserve this year at his winery, Vellum Wines. Randy McFarland announced the pending nuptials of his oldest son; Joe Lins bragged that son Jeremy will be gradutating from Loyola Marymount with a degree in the Classics, has been honored as Scholar of the Year, and received the highest MCAT scores at Loyola. After a year off, Jeremy will be attending medical school. In addition to scholarly achievement, Jeremy’s three piece band won the Battle of the Bands and will be playing at the Roxy. Leslie McCarthy counter-bragged that her son also won the Battle of the Bands, in his case at Troy High School, already played the Roxy six months ago, and will graduate Troy by skin of his teeth. To the great relief of his parents, I’m sure! Not to be outbragged, Pat Hartnett announced the graduation of daughter Elizabeth (known to Rotarians as one of the producers of recent demotion night events). She will graduate cum laude, finishing her degree in three years.
Bragging concluded, the “winning” raffle ticket was discovered in the hands of Tom Meyer. Although ably assisted by Bill Schenk, neither was able to identify the musician: Chris Powell and the Fire Blue Flamers. Thanks, Zoot Velasco, for providing yet another un-answerable raffle question!
Dan Ouweleen introduced guest speaker, Julie Kreisler. Julie is a member of the Long Beach Rotary Club and is President of TRK Marketing. She completed her business degree at the University of Phoenix. Julie will be chairing District 5320’s Public Relations Committee next Rotary year, assisting the marketing chairs of each club. Theresa Harvey is our Club’s Marketing Chair. Click here for her Slide Show.
Julie’s presentation described the role of social media in marketing, especially as it relates to Rotary. Her message is that Rotary needs to toot its own horn more. Marketing in general, and social media in particular, can help recruit new members, stay connected to new generations, and communicate the great work we do to a larger community. Rotaract will have a technology committee to help clubs with their own social media outreach.
Julie reported that only 21 percent of Americans are NOT using some form of technology to communicate, whether checking email, blogging, or texting. Information that can be shared using social media includes: Special events; Fundraising announcements; Community service programs; Guest speakers. Julie went on the compare traditional verses social media and the potential outreach for Rotary, and our own businesses, is greatly expanding in social media and contracting in traditional media. Twitter is open to the public and acts as a search engine using keywords. Facebook is semi private as only those who friend you get the updates. Twitter currently has 100 million active users.
Julie will make her Powerpoint presentation available to the Club. Her material includes instructions on setting up Facebook and Twitter accounts. She also described Hoot Suite, a social media dashboard where you can look at all your social media connections in one place. She also described Link’d In as good for talking to each other. Rotary international has a Lin’k In group to share information as a community Social media clout is how viral your messages are, how many people “share”, how many “hits” you get, and an estimate of the audience your message reaches. When asked how much time does all this take, Julie recommended starting small, even five minutes a day. Ultimately, spending 8-10 hours a month on social media is a wise investment for your business. As a service of District 5320, Julie will provide one brief webinar per month, adding new tools each time.
President Scott thanked our speaker, presenting her with the coveted Rotary pig, suitable for stuffing...Thought for the day: light travels faster than sound. That is why some people seem brighter until you hear them speak.
