In deference to the bell ringing critics of the club, President J Richey refrained from ringing the bell to start this meeting. Clearly, J is not afraid to break with tradition to keep us guessing!
Pledge, Song and Invocation
Louis Kuntz lead us in the pledge, Deacon J led us in song and Don Bankhead offered the invocation.
Introductions
Bill Hite willingly introduced the guests on a moment’s notice. Dan Hughes was a guest of Chris Meyer, as were Fullerton’s Chief of Police Mike Sellers and Captain Dan Hughes. Dricilla Mills and John Mills were guests of Keith Mills and Past President M.E. Roco was a guest of Leslie McCarthy.
Recognitions
Joyce Capelle was in top form, cutting no one slack except Fred Johnson, despite the fact that his Boys and Girls Club of Fullerton was the recipient of $50,000 from the All Stars Game “Homerun Derby”. Joyce fittingly fined the members of J’s Board of Directors who weren’t at J’s inaugural meeting except for any who also missed today’s second meeting.
Deborah Sanchez was fined to get back a picture of her and her newly appointed Pasadena Chief of Police husband. Birthdays for this week included Scott Dowds, Nissa Foster, Don Ludwig, Robert Hathaway, Winnie Houston, and Walt Swatkowski. Joyce reveled in the data accessible with Bob Jahncke’s website and recognized several members who celebrate some annual anniversary of membership in Rotary.
Opportunity Drawing
Fred Johnson challenged Tom Meyer and Keith Mills with the question of who has hit the most home runs in all the All Star games. The correct answer was Willie Mays with 23.

Announcements
Pres J made a point to tell the club that despite the razzing that Past President Jeff Hutchison got, the club’s financial statements showed that his budget was actually in the black. Unfortunately, Jeff wasn’t present to enjoy his vindication in person.
Bill Mathy announced that Dick Daybell’s stay at St Jude Medical Center should be coming to an end when he is released on Friday. Jim Williams announced a fun “Rat Pack” event for Fullerton Civic Light Opera coming up Aug. 28th . Leslie McCarthy announced the upcoming July 22 “The Good Guys” Western BBQ at the Boys and Girls Club. Bob Radde invited one and all to join the Program Committee meeting on the third Thursday each month at 7:30AM. Rich Crane reminded us of our Rotary Flyers baseball game at Cal State this Friday.
Special ceremony
Miko Krisvoy and Louis Kuntz were parted from their Newest Nine ribbons! Contrats!!

Pres J red letters from Cal State Fullerton for the donation, Tony Amato’s family for the flowers and International Dental Clinics for the donations for their programs.
Program
Our own Pat Hartnett, instrumental to our recent demotion skit, did an admirable job with his Power Point presentation in which he discussed the International Rotary Foundation, the Fullerton Rotary Foundation. Their titles indicate which geographic areas are covered by the separate entities. Contrary to many other service clubs, Rotary is a global organization, so one of it’s goals is to have 25-30% of each club’s activities be an international in nature. Eradication of diseases, water projects emergency aid and environmental projects comprise the major focus of RIs efforts. Despite this, Pat noted, only 30% of Rotarians donate to the Rotary International Foundation.
Polio is the flagship challenge for Rotary and two efforts to address this are “End Polio Now” and “Polio Plus”. Polio Plus entails more local fundraising efforts, like the July 31 District Baseball game which our club has committed to 99 tickets. (ask Pat for some) We also have a Drum Clinic in the works at Cal State Fullerton, a “Polio Sunday” at churches, a special website. “End Polio Now” is primarily the Bill and Melinda Gates matching grant challenge which will yield $355,000 if Rotary raises $200 million. Polio has been eradicated in all but 5 countries and we need this final push to finally prevail over this devastating disease. “World Polio Day” on October 24, 2010 is intended to bring international attention to this challenge the human race faces. Help is needed for an upcoming fundraising “Jog-a-thon”. Details to follow.
Closing thought from Pres J
When wealth is lost, nothing is lost
When health is lost, some is lost
When character is lost, all is lost.
