Volume 70, Issue 8 Rota-Scribe: Joe Lins

Lunch was a scrumptious Caesar Salad, followed by some good ole Sausage and Peppers along with some terrific sautéed veggies with genuine surprise spinach lasagna with the lovely fruit tray at the end of the table.

At 12:31.48 pm President J. Richey called the meeting to order.  Travis Norton proudly led us with the Pledge of Allegiance followed by Leroy Fulton and Don Ludwig’s version of “Home on the Range” followed by the ever reliable “Smile”.  It was great to see Bernie Dunlap lead us in the Prayer to St. Francis.  A job well done by all.

Bill Mathey introduced the guest, Tom Johnson a local businessman, guest of President J.  Keep em comin Mr. President.

 Announcements: Mr. President J read us a thank you letter from Mitch Hovey for our donation to Meals on Wheels and Kathy Allred gave us an update on the 4-way test refresher course she recently took. Captain Dick Daybell let us know that next week’s fine master will be the club Treasurer.  Dr. Bill Peloquin had something to say about something in Ohio, call him for more info.  Bob Clark, evidence on why not everyone should wear hats, thanked everyone who participated in the Boys and Girls Club Event and let us know that there was extra wine that can be had.  Talk to Dan Kiernan for information on how to get your hands on that wine.  Louis Kuntz is heading up the sign up sheet for the Rotarian Business Luncheon honoring our Nomination, Mark McGeeZoot always talks about an event that by the time you read this it already happened so it’s not worth mentioning other that what a great job he has done on behalf of the Muck since his arrival. Diane Masseth-Jones received the bad joke of the week about some guy with no clothes in a church missing an organ….  And, finally, the Fullerton College Oktoberfest will be raffling a new Mustang.

Our Recognition….Fine MasterPat, I’m tired of being a retired Chief of Police so I think I’ll run for council, McKinley started out with the very manly repugnance of a  comment made by John Derry, TOOTSY WOOTSY, $2.  Greg Hickman was fined $2 for doing such a great job allowing Fred Johnson to do something.  Camadore Dick Daybell was nabbed $2 for fining the Big Wigs from 5320.  Phil Silverman, $2 for being the only defense attorney Pat knew that would bring lunch into the jail for those defendants who lost their case.  Thanks to Frank Kawasi and Scott Dowds, four great exchange kids who Pat took to the shooting range, while it was a great time it’s difficult to teach a kid to shoot a gun when they don’t speak English. President J was next for a $2 fine, you see, all presidents screw up, but when you screwed up last week you blamed Les McCarthy and that’ll cost ya $2.  Coach Maryalyce was fined $2 for having almost as many wins as Papa Joe Paterno.  Happy Birthday to Ken Kasche, 62!!!, Pat Hartnet’s anniversary, Jim Williams 59th Birthday, Allyn Lean is way over his head with Nancy celebrating his 37th anniversary.  $2 just doesn’t seem to be enough.  Honorable Captain/Commodore Dick Daybell is enjoying his 49th anniversary and to wrap it all up Bill Klinghoffer was recognized for disagreeing   with our guest speaker last week, $2 for that quack of a duck.

Let’s do the drawing with lucky ticket number 789287 held by the Honorable Captain/Commodore Dick Daybell who asked for assistance from Bob Ratti.  Now at this point in my notes there is confusion and I do believe it was Dick who drew the number with Bob winning asking for assistance from Pat, I’m running for council, McKinley.  Back to the question, “Which NFL quarterback fumbled away the ball in 4 Super Bowls?”  (Theme music to Jeopardy quietly plays in the back of my head)  The answer is……………….Roger Staubach!

Program, the moment we have been waiting for;

Today’s topic are two Craft Talks and Bob Clark made the introductions starting with Don LandersDon was born and raised in the small town of Lindsey, California where he added to a long lineage of Lindseites.  He is a CSUF (Fresno) graduate married to his life partner and a permanent fixture, Judy, for 37 years.  They have two kids, 29 year old Todd and 24 year old Art Graduate daughter who is now a wine broker.  Don is the oldest of 4 with two brothers and one sister.  Dad owned a hardware store while he was a paperboy, box boy, nightsleeper for the fire department, drove an ambulance while at Fresno State.  He met a lot of Police Officers while on that job urging him to become one of the men in blue.  He served with the Tulare County Sherriff’s Department from 1972 – 1998.  His favorite hobby is flying while his favorite show as a kid was Sky King.  He saved his money while working at his Dad’s Hardware Store and paper route to take flying lessons.  That helped him fly for the departments he worked for, much less expensive than doing it on his own.  Don also complimented his passion for skiing by becoming a member of the ski patrol.  Although Don enjoys golf he rarely has time to chase the little white ball around town.  His Grandfather and Dad were on Council and served as Mayor, so being the great son and grandson he served on the council and as mayor of Visalia.  In 2001 he joined Rotary in Vasalia and when he moved to CSUF (Fullerton) he joined our club.  Today is proudly his second anniversary at Fullerton and he is happy to be a part of our club.

Next on the agenda is Irene Lang who has had an interesting life to say the least.  Irene was born in Lithuania of German/Russian parents during the heart of World War Two spending 8 years in a refugee camp with her mother.  She immigrated to the USA with her mother attending the University of Illinois.  Irene spent a year teaching in Puerto Rico before returning to obtain her PHD.  She spent another year working as a Trade Specialist in Washington D.C. where her greatest challenge was different people’s mindsets.  She termed herself as a career student and her proudest moment is her honorary Doctorate in 1998.  A most surprising conclusion for her was that her love of foreign languages combined with her international experiences with a focus on sales presentations gave her the unique opportunity to see that marketing concepts are taught the same throughout the world!  Being the Chair of the Marketing Department, working with great faculty makes the job so much easier.  Last May Irene received a Lifetime Achievement Award for her work in marketing.  She would like to continue onward as long as she can continue to make contributions at a level she has become known for.  Her mother passed away in 2008 and she has had the opportunity to meet with some who knew her father who spent ten years in a concentration camp.  Unfortunately he passed away eight short months after being released.  She continues to live out her dreams of travel and education.  She feels strongly about how the war affected her and her family.  A wonderful presentation on the life of Irene, however, I think we only scratched the surface of a wonderful, educated, warm woman.

President J thanked both for their contribution to Rotary and presented them both with the highly coveted Heifer Certificate.

The thought of the day:  Meticulous planning will allow everything to appear spontaneous!

Meeting adjourned by President J at 12:34.12
