Opening Traditions

Jay Milam ticked the ivories for our dining entertainment prior to President J Richie making his own music by ringing the Rotary Bell for the start of another meeting. Immediately after warmly welcoming us all, J asked Dean Stockwell to lead us in the pledge and then Leroy Fulton led us in “School Days” and “Smile”. Leroy told a little story related to his choice of the first song which I would normally share with you right now, but  I need to be fair to those who actually attended the meeting and give them an advantage, so I must refrain from sharing this. Scott Dowds did an great job with the invocation and Kevin Frye was prepared but had no guests or visitors reveal themselves this week.

Recognitions

Pat Hartnett Fined Leroy Fulton for his 59 year marriage and Fred Johnson for his 25 years and Jon West’s 46 years of marriage. Jimmie’s wife Sally had a birthday as did Kimberly Nguyen and  Pat Hartnett remembered that Bob Maxwell was at his wedding 24 years ago and belatedly thanked him for a fondue set that he still looks forward to using.  Everyone in the room with a hat was fined $2.00.

Opportunity Drawing

Marty Burbank asked the trivia question and then answered it before J Richey and Pat McKinley could come up with their follow up guesses.

Program

Bob Hathaway introduced George Giokaris who in turn introduced Fullerton Union High School Board president Bill Dunlop and board members Marilyn Buche, Bob Hathaway and Robert Singer as well as principal Cathy Gach. George came with a well-prepared handout filled with facts confirming the quality of education available at our local public high schools. Some facts he related include: Education is the biggest business in the world.  The FUHS school districts has 1 billion dollars in assets and has been recognized for doing very will with it’s financial management. In 1970, only 55% of Americans graduated from high school because there were plenty of jobs and some went into the armed forces because of Vietnam War. Now, our kids actually compete for the high paying and high skill jobs with people around the world. Our kids are holding their own.

Closing

President J Richey gave a final welcome to the guests and left us with a closing thought. “Always Plan Ahead- It wasn’t raining when Noah built the Arc”.
