Meeting Notes and Club News

Wednesday, July 11, 2001       Volume 61, Issue 1

Written and Reported by Bill Schenk

The Doctor is in!

Promptly at the appointed time President Bill rang the bell on his first meeting. Dressed in traditional surgical scrubs and Elton John’s old new year’s eve eyeglasses, Dr. Peloquin prevailed upon Don Bankhead to lead the club in the Pledge followed by America the Beautiful led by the Griff Duncan Trio, featuring Jim Young, and Bob Savage.

Prez Bill’s first order of business was to introduce the new board of directors: Wally (past president); Mike Oates, Bob Jahncke, Tom Meyer, Bob Savage, Chris Fraschetti, Claude Jones, Winston Creel, Greg Franklin, and Terri Grassi.

Bob Clark, Jr. introduced Bill Gillespie from Fullerton South who was the day’s only visiting Rotarian. Bob McNutt, Allyn Lean, Winston Creel, Ray Hansen, Greg Franklin, Deborah Koff, and Alan Atwell all introduced guests. Alan Atwell also happily introduced a second guest and the club was happy to greet former member, Mike Mogensen, who looked tanned and robust following his recent treatments!

Prez Bill awarded Rotarian of the Week honors to Leroy Fulton for his efforts toward the wonderful demotion night held two weeks ago.

Pat Spencer, assistant dean of Fullerton College and guest of Greg Franklin won the Opportunity raffle this week. She took the ten-dollar consolation prize for not knowing the exact year of the fall of the Alamo in San Antonio, Texas (site of the recent Rotary International meeting). Also unknown were three of the four leaders of the US/Texas forces (John Wayne, Randy Travis, and Willie Nelson were all wrong answers).

Mike Oates thanked all the families that opened their homes to the exchange students recently.

Mike Oates also introduced the three newest Rotarians. Inducted today were Amy Kluth, Brian Chung, and Leslie McCarthy.

Jim Blackburn was burdened with three weeks worth of recognitions. He began with Dennis Ullrich who celebrated with Jami their 13th wedding anniversary by going out to dinner….. In Paris! Nancy Wimer will tell them that the 40th anniversary is sweeter than the 13th, even though she and Warren had dinner at home. Frank and Joan Kawase celebrated their 39th anniversary, Ed and Marilyn Little celebrate their 49th, Harry and Helen Brown celebrated their 19th, Phil and Rosemary Silverman celebrated their 20th, Dick and Norma Jones celebrated their 45th, Jeff and Debbie Hutchison celebrated their 24th, and Buck and Bobbie Catlin get the Gold (+ 4)

Paul Dudley, Bill Mathy, Vern Andrews Tom Meyer, and Mike Oates all were recognized for spousal birthdays.

Rick Price, Warren Wimer, Don Mlodzik, Don Bankhead, and Jim Armstrong all were recognized for their birthdays, but none paid more than Walt Ziegler did when he was warmly recognized for his 83rd birthday!

Program

Deborah Koff fulfilled another Newest Nine assignment by giving us her Craft Talk. Debbie’s eldest daughter, Shana, was in attendance to hear her mom detail the long road taken from humble beginnings in San Diego through her current position as head of Marketing for Park Vista, in Fullerton, where she has been since it opened in 1992. Deborah has two other children (both currently students at CAL STATE FULLERTON). Debbie overcame a life full of challenges and raised her children and fills every day with love and joyfulness.

President Bill took a few minutes at the end of the meeting to outline this year’s agenda for Rotary International. This year’s RI slogan is “Man Kind is our Business.” More information about RI and Fullerton Rotary is available at our own website, www.fullertonrotary.orgThe Bright Sun

Special Message:

The Board is very concerned about the low level of attendance of some of our members. The Board is looking at options to improve the attendance, including the use of a fine for non-attendance. It was suggested that we ask for input on this issue from the members, either by direct conversation, e-mail, or whatever.
