Our new President, Ken Kaisch, opened the meeting with mention of his goals for the club website. The website is a tool and a resource and will be updated more often, so check it out at fullertonrotrayclub.com!
Club News: 1. The very first board meeting of the year will be held on July 21st via zoom. All interested members are welcome to join. Pledge of allegiance by Scott Dowds was followed by a wonderful invocation by Cathy Gach. Ken then forgot to announce the guests because he’s new and obviously has no idea what he’s doing. Don’t fret, your Rotascribe wrote them down… but we aren’t quite there in the timeline of events, because he has not yet realized that he has forgotten the guests. So, moving on to… Announcements: 1. Can anyone help poor Susan with rotary zoom calls?! She’s just one person and members should, no, need to step up and host a meeting or two. We can train you! Email Susan Ouwleen for more information. 2. Next Wednesday will be a tie contest, that’s right, tie contest! Where your ugliest, coolest, hippest, cutest, biggest, smallest, etc… tie to the meeting next week. Please email Ken if you’d like to be a judge for the tie contest. Fingers crossed for prizes. 3. All and any member can propose a project to the board. If you have an idea for a project, event, or anything else that will benefit the club and the Fullerton community don’t hold onto it- share it with the board! Fine Master: Well, this was rough. Bill Mathy is responsible for lining up fine masters. This week he chose Past President, Mike Cochran. Mike totally bailed like a typical Past President and so he AND Bill were fined. Ken stepped up to fine the members, with too big of a smile on his face. Someone please make sure that these fines aren’t being sent to Ken for his personal use! Ken fined just about every member while still sticking to a musical theme to match the interests and career of our guest speaker, it was pretty impressive. Great fining, Ken! Brett, to no one’s shock, was fined for spoiling an answer. John Phelps still wants to know, “Who cares?”. And, if you didn’t know, Cathy is terrible at trivia. NOW Guests were announced: Antonia Graham, Deputy City Manager of Fullerton Guest announcements are followed by the introduction of our fantastic speaker, Armondo from the Alley Cats, who’s “words per minute” impressed your rotascribe and she’s aware of how many words she can squeeze into one minute. Jim Williams was asked to introduce Armondo, but then deferred the task to Farrell Hirsch because the Alley Cats were performing at The Muck the following evening and Farrell knows Armondo very well. Program: Guest Speaker, Armondo from the Alley Cats Armondo and the original Alley Cats started their career right here in Fullerton while attending Fullerton Junior College before your Rotascribe was born, so does it really matter what year? Their very first real show was at the Wilshire Theater! From the sounds of it, they got their “big break” in 1992 at the Arsenio Hall Show. They were hired by Disney in 1997 to do their Hercules shows. After Disney ran its course, The Alley Cats got a call about working with schools. Armondo hated doing fairs and festivals so they decided to stick to schools a while. They put all their eggs in that basket and then the economy tanked, and the school music/arts funds diminished. They were working for about 180 schools, so they needed to quickly find work elsewhere. Jay Leno’s manager ended up signing with them as openers for his shows for about 5 years. Fast forward to present time, The Alley Cats are doing virtual shows and classes for schools, but fear that the classic school assemblies in the gymnasiums will either never come back or it will take a long time before they do. They aren’t sure what the future looks like, but Armondo is positive and if the past has proved anything, it’s that they can bounce back! Like all zoom meetings, this was recorded, and The Alley Cat’s story was great, so go back and watch it! Ken gifted Armondo a can of nuts on behalf of our nutty club and a tote bag for speaking. Closing Thoughts: President Ken closed the meeting with (unfortunately) very accurate quotes depicting the current times in this Covid-19 world, “The trash goes out more than me!” and “We all may be finally getting grounded for all the things we never got caught doing!”.
