Rotary Wheel Rotagram - Meeting Notes and Club News Rotary Wheel
Volume 81 Issue 6 Wed, Aug 4, 2021 Rota-Scribe Thad Sandford

Our President, Zoot Valesco, was out for the day. The heir apparent, Joe Lins opened the meeting at 12:30

Carl Camp gave the invocation; Bill Hite led us in the pledge of allegiance.

Bob Muschek led in song, singing Home on the Range and Smile.

Judy Atwell presented a Rotary flag from some small town in the state of Washington.

Scott Dowds gave us a reminder about the importance of listening. He admitted that he had not been listening in a previous meeting and missed the question. He had failed to remind folks that our long time former member, Vern Andrews once pitched 22 no-hit innings baseball one day in a double header. Quite a record.

Guests with us included Dick Daybell our former club President and Wilma Peloquin.

Beverly Berryman was bribed into coordinating the sign-in and welcome desk. However, the bribe was later challenged by the Recognition Master stating that Leslie McCarthy could not wave fines when she is not the fine master. The discussion left Beverly with the job. Congrats Bev.

Ken Kasich was the fine master for the day and levied a large (record?) number of fines, too numerous to record them all in these notes. Ken was later teased that he must clearly love having the microphone. We may need him to repeat as President. I do have a list of the fines in case Cathy Gach our treasurer missed some of them. Key anniversaries recognized were: Bob Jahncke for his wedding anniversary (Number 60 Congrats), Leslie McCarthy for 21 years in Rotary, Jim Ripley and Dan Ouweleen for birthdays.

Our speaker for the day was Rabbi Arthur Levine, PhD., who gave a very interesting, but scary, talk on Pancreatic Cancer. He was diagnosed with the stage 4 cancer and has been fighting it for 2 years. It has the lowest 5-year survival rate of the 7 deadliest cancers in the U.S., with a 10% survival rate at 5 years (3% with stage 4). There is no early detection test available and often it has metastasized by the time it is diagnosed which eliminated some surgery options. Rabbi has been taking several chemical treatments and experimental drugs. He discussed the symptoms, risk factors, and potential treatments. But said there are few optional treatments available today. His presentation is available and is attached.

Joe Lins closed the meeting at 1:30. Rabbi Levine stayed a few more minutes to address some specific questions.
