We started off our special lunch at the Muckenthaler with a salad, garlic bread, pasta with cream sauce and tomatoes, chicken, carrots and fruit. President Scott Dowds called the meeting to order at 12:35 p.m. Joann Brannock gave the invocation . Andy Ersek (visiting Rotarian from Orange North Rotary) led us in the pledge of allegiance, and Songmaster Nissa Foster led us in singing My County Tis of Thee and a round of Smile.
Kelly Chaplin then introduced the visiting Rotarians and guests: In addition to Andy Ersek from Orange North Rotary, we had J Richey’s guest Beverly Thompson, Bob Hillhouse’s father Clayton , and Colette Kaufman from our own Colette’s Catering.

ndy Anderson and his wife in our prayers, as she appears to now be in the most advanced stages of Alzheimer Disease. Les Christiansen’s services were yesterday, and Les’s wish would be to have donations in his name to Rotary Foundation. Leslie McCarthy discussed the needs for the Top 100, first day of which is tomorrow. Dan Ouweleen mentioned the Jog-a-Thon Social, next Thursday at 5:45 at Pat Hartnett’s office (on Commonwealth Ave.). The event is free, so please join in. He also announced the available Matching Points program for Paul Harris Fellow. Call him if you have any questions.
President Scott thanked Zoot for having us here at the Muck, and then introduced him as the Finemaster. Bob Hillhouse was supposed to be the fine master but said he had no time, so he was fined $5. Zoot recognized the car show committee: Bob Hillhouse, who is the “key guy”, Andy Ersek, Vice Chair, he recruits all the cars, our own Blake Smith is the chief judge and gets all the judges. Bob Maxwell is a judge. Wolf Knabe missed his birthday. Bill Schenk, celebrating his birthday, gets a shot at Let’s Make a Deal because he is an authority on weird music. On his third guess, he identified the singer of “ The Streak” as Ray Stevens. Randy McFarland, was identified as the worst joke teller, but the one who most enjoys it. In his honor, we heard, “What did the grape say when the Italian stepped on him? Not much, he just gave a little whine.” $5 fine ensued. Bob Clark’s spouse birthday was acknowledged, but he’s not here. A bad joke not worth repeating was told. Joe Lins was acknowledged for his anniversary, 26 years for which he paid a $5 fine. Terry Ott also celebrating an anniversary, number 41, paid $4. Happy Dollars opportunity had Leslie McCarthy chip in $5 because of the great Top 100 participation and because it’s almost over. Chris Meyer was called out by Zoot as they left a parking lot at same time, and Chris almost ran him Zoot; Chris said it was on purpose, and happily paid $5.
There was no Trivia today.

Zoot then morphed into the speaker on the Muckenthaler programs. He talked about the mission of the Muck; primarily to preserve the Muckenthaler Center and estate. We got a little history on the fact that the Muckenthaler’s were heavily involved in the founding of much of Orange County. The wife’s Adele’s parents were involved in the founding of Placentia and Yorba Linda, and the husband’s family was involved in founding of Anaheim and Seal Beach. He talked about the galleries. Right now there is a beautiful retrospective of Don Normark. Don was a WWII veteran, he took the GI bill and hitchhiked to Fullerton College to take a photography class, and became a photographer. He took all the surviving pictures of Chavez Ravine, and the Los Angeles Farm, included in his show. He was Sunset Magazine’s garden photographer for 40 years. Zoot talked about the next exhibit which is called “Combat Paper.” The art is from veterans with PTSD, who shredded their uniforms, the pieces of which were turned into paper and printed/painted with images from their heads, which was very therapeutic for them. The last gallery show of the season is Mexican and Mexican American art.
Upcoming Speakers, in October, there will be an “adults” portrait of Ben Franklin. The Family Series, Joe Monti Magic on October 25th. Zoot talked about the wonderful upcoming music events, including jazz concerts, a luau, roots music, ukulele festival, salsa festival, hillbilly reunion, blues, and zydeco. For the entire 7 concert series, the members’ cost is only $60, individual shows are $10 for members, $20 for non-members. For more information, go the website themuck.org.
There are also many special events throughout the year. This weekend is the 17th Annual Motor Car Festival, with hot rods on Saturday, and concourse Sunday. This year they are featuring Corvettes, food, and entertainment. Sunday Janet Klein and the Parlor Boys are playing, and there will be a horseless carriage parade.
There are a lot of great events still coming this season. There is the Luau, a Ballet Folklorio show, the Arts Legacy Award (held at Plummer Auditorium), Fullerton Sings – the Muck’s version of American Idol, the Zoot Roast for his 50th Birthday and a fundraiser for the Muck on October 18th. Jim Williams can be contacted for information on this event.
The upcoming Summer Solstice event will have tacos from around the world. This event is on June 24th and is a Fundraiser for the Sister City Association. They also have very popular Day of the Dead, and other Holiday events.
Next year they will be allowing people to produce their own event, so submit a proposal for an event you’d like to have. Zoot talked about their Outreach and Education programs, including 40 school tours, outreach with the Boys & Girls Club, Crittendon, and WTLC. He extended thanks to John Phelps and the Phelps Foundation for their support of the Muckenthaler Foundation. Next year, they will be doing a Quinciñera for kids in shelter who otherwise would not get to have this important celebration.
Zoot pointed out the Members only benefits, including 50% off offers available only to members. He asked that we all consider being a member, and come and enjoy the programs that are available. They would like to make up for lost funding through memberships. He also pointed out the great benefits of corporate sponsorship, and what a great place to advertise the Muck is with the numbers of people who come through each year in both public and private events. Giving at the corporate level gets a free event here.
The last Wednesday of June will be demotion night here at the Muck. President Scott presented Zoot with the coveted pig, and we adjourned to see the cars and exhibits at 1:20.
The closing thought for the day was from Mario Andretti. “Desire is the key to motivation, but it’s the determination and commitment to an unrelenting pursuit of your goal – a commitment to excellence – that will enable you to attain the success you seek.
If everything seems under control, you’re just not going fast enough.
If you wait, all that happens is that you get older.”
