Rota-Scribe: Jim Ripley

President Zoot Velasco welcomed everyone at today’s meeting. Carol Morris gave the invocation and Marty Burbank led us in the pledge. Ken Kaisch provided a Rotary moment of peace. President Velasco thanked Beverly Berryman for greeting and signing in today’s members and guests, and Jim Ripley for being today’s Rotary scribe. Guests today included Bill Edman, guest of Dan Ouweleen; Sally Williams, guest of Jim Williams; Jeanie Stockwell, guest of Judy Atwell.

Joe Lins had the honor of sharing his Rotary minutes with the club. Bud Lange and Carol Morris led the club in a chorus of Woody Guthrie’s hit “This Land is Your Land”. Today’s announcements: no meeting next Wednesday given we have “Love Fullerton” this coming Saturday. Matt Howells asked those planning to volunteer to meet at 8:30 am at the Fullerton Community College quad before heading off to various locations to help with painting. Sunday, May 1st is our club’s Fullerton Faux Festival to be held at the Fullerton Community College Campus Theatre at 6 pm, featuring Faux Rock Stars for Real Kids. All proceeds go to Fullerton-based charities for youth, education, and social services. The evening will include the music of Elton John, The Rolling Stones, and Jonny Cash.

Also, a reminder to register for the Rotary District Conference to be held on May 14th from 8 am to 3 pm at the Lakeview Community Center in Irvine.

Leslie McCarthy won today’s Duck Race, and Judy Atwell was awarded President Velasco’s poker chip for being a change-maker in our community as well as our Rotary club.

Monica Fernandez was our recognition master today, recognizing Rikki Bains, and Travis McShane, not in attendance today. John Phelps, who is having a birthday; Beverly Berryman’s Rotary 2nd anniversary; Andrew Gregson, who is celebrating his first wedding anniversary; Joe Lins, whose wife, Suzy is having a birthday.

Jim Williams introduced today’s speaker, Dedrique Taylor, head coach of the CSUF men’s basketball team. Dedrique shared his background with the club and his gratefulness to be coaching the CSUF team, who made this year’s playoffs, marking the most successful season to date. He is very proud that his team beat both UCI, Santa Barbara, and Long Beach State. The school recruits players from all over the world, 26 of whom now play professionally around the world. President Velasco thanked Dedrique for joining us today and presented him with 50 shares of community stock for our community investment awards.

President Velasco brought today’s meeting to adjourn.
