JPL and NASA representative Paul Propster

Meeting was called to order by club President Joe Lins. He thanked John and Kerry Phelps for hosting another amazing holiday party at their beautiful home, “they deserve the highly coveted speakers gift!”

President Lins thanked President Elect Jim Ripley for covering him on December 7th, 2022.

Today’s important facts on setting New Years Resolution or resetting goals for the upcoming year. He quoted book titled “Never Finished,” by David Goggins, “Many dreams die while suffering. Think about it. We conjure our biggest dreams, our most audacious goals, when we feel safe and warm. Even if you’re struggling financially, emotionally, spiritually or physically, your grand plan to defy the odds probably came to you in a moment of comfort, when you had time to evaluate where you are and how you got there. There is no space for big picture thinking when you’re in the heat of the battle. When all is calm, even temporarily, damn near anything can feel possible. So that’s when you dream it up and map it all out. Then you begin and unforeseen challenges knock you flat on your back. Whenever you’re engaged in an intense struggle, the result of which will have a major impact on your life going forward, you will be challenged to your utmost- and these moments of truth within a larger quest can demand so much from you that you are bound to feel overmatched at times. When that happens, many people panic because they come to believe that they are imposters and their dream was actually a fantasy. In a blink, they go from being driven and focused to becoming convinced that they had no business even trying. So they quit. Right then. Right there. While teetering on the edge, they fail to grasp that there is something they can do to jam that quitter’s spiral carrying them right down the drain. We can make the One-Second Decision to think instead of react.”

For our Commencement ceremonies, Leslie McCarthy gave us our invocation. She led us in a powerful prayer for peace. Jordan Garcia gave us our Patriotic Moment, “We are blessed to be in a country where we are afforded these liberties.” He led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. The duo of Bud Lang and Rebecka Forrester, our Song Masters, were in a festive mood. The New Year has blessed us all and for that, they led us in a little tune by the name, “Auld Lang Syne.” President Lins joked that the song contained the word “sake” as in the drink.

Today’s guests are, Milo Karnes, a Junior at Orange County School of the Arts. Milo has an interest in physics and has an eye on Berkley or Stanford. He is President Joe Lins guest and nephew. Dick Ackerman and Bob Simon, guests from Fullerton Rotary South.

President Lins announced that the club’s Matching Gift Campaign raised $38,000 from the Club and the club’s Anonymous Donor contributed $40,000! Huge Thank You to Joyce Capelle and Cathy Gach for all their hard work on that project.

District Governor Dan Ouweleen took the stage, “I promise, I’m not going to dance.” He announced that he will partner with an organization that helps women that were trafficked get jobs in the service industry, and it raises money to fight against human trafficking, “we get a lot of people participate because half the money comes back to our promotion.” Carol Morris announced that her daughter gifted her Rotary International U.S. Postage Stamps from 1955 and are available for viewing for anyone interested. Rebecka Forrester announced a fundraiser collaboration with Monkey Business Café and Quick Quack Car Wash in Fullerton.

Newest Nine Member Bill Edman was today’s Recognition Master. “How many Superbowl rings has Tom Brady won?” A few members answered incorrectly and were fined $5. Dan Ouweleen was recognized for walking 10 miles in the Rose Parade in Pasadena, California. Christian Esteban was recognized for his Rotary Anniversary, “perfect because Matt Howells just ripped off my Newest Nine Ribbon. 3 years coming,” he joked. Johny Hong was recognized and fined for his wedding anniversary. President Joe Lins was recognized and fined for his birthday.

Our Program at hand was introduced by Past President Zoot Velasco, “Launching New Frontiers in Space Science,” brought to us by master storyteller, senior leader in strategic planning and marketing, JPL and NASA representative Paul Propster. Paul is a seasoned storyteller, keynote speaker, strategy lover, team motivator, and message driven professional. He is a Cal State Fullerton University alumnus who has been working at JPL for the past couple of years. He shared with the club what NASA and JPL have in store for Robotic Space Exploration. Most recent mission is Artemis. Artemis is the first in a series of increasingly complex missions that will enable human exploration to the Moon and Mars. Lunar Flashlight is a planned low-cost CubeSat lunar orbiter mission to explore, locate, and estimate size and composition of water ice deposits on the Moon for future exploitation by robots or humans. SWOT mission is focused on Earth’s oceans with U.S. and French oceanographers joining forces to develop this satellite mission to make the first global survey of Earth’s surface water, observe the fine details of the ocean’s surface topography, and measure how water bodies change over time. DART (double asteroid redirection test) is a NASA space mission aimed at testing a method of planetary defense against near-Earth objects. CAL (cold atom laboratories) is an experimental instrument on board the ISS which utilizes lasers to chill atoms to a temperature to near zero to study their behavior under these conditions. INSIGHT (Interior Exploration using Seismic Investigations, Geodesy and Heat Transport) was a robotic lander used to study the deep interior of Mars, “right before Christmas, it sent its last message. It was very emotional for our team when it went to sleep.” Upcoming missions include, PSYCHE 1B, a journey to a unique metal asteroid orbiting the Sun between Mars and Jupiter launches this summer. “We believe this is the only metallic core. Exposed nickel iron core is of an early planet.” Lunar Trailblazer is a planned small lunar orbiter, part of NASA’s SIMPLEx program. It will detect and map water on the lunar surface to determine how its form, abundance, and location relate to geology with its mission to aid in the understanding of lunar water and the Moon’s water cycle. PREFIRE (polar radiant energy in the far-infrared experiment) is an Earth mission. It will gather missing data to help scientist understand the polar cap regions regulate Earth’s temperature and climate. EUROPA CLIPPER mission, which is set to launch in 2024 and will land in Jupiter in 2030. It is designed to study Galilean moon Europa through a series of flybys while in orbit around Jupiter. Earth side of missions include, Earth System Observatory, “Earth has gotten the short end of the stick. With larger budgets, we will begin to study the Earth’s atmosphere.” Paul took questions from club members in attendance at the end of his presentation. President Lins awarded Paul with the highly coveted speaker gift, “now I have to regroup after finding out it’s pronounced Uranus,” joked President Lins.

Last thing on the agenda was the 50/50 drawing worth $41 and 2 more drawings for a free Muckenthaler Event, courtesy of Farrell Hirsch. Ticket holder number 6369539, Bailey Klein won the money. Raco and Duane Greenleaf won trips to the Muckenthaler events. “Thank you for coming today. Next week will feature WTLC’s Fight to Prevent Human Trafficking and Shelter Women, presented by Executive Director Mark Lee and Dr. Nefta Pereda. Thanks again for coming today and we will see you next week. Charge On! Meeting adjourned.”
