Rota-Scribe: Gerardo Chagolla

Joya Scholars Review with Christian Esteban
Proposed New Member: Craig Weinreich. Craig is the principal at Sunny Hills High School.

Meeting was called to order by club President Joe Lins. He welcomed everyone in attendance, “thanks for being here this afternoon.” Today’s important facts, “we all know about Murphy’s Law: anything that can go wrong will. But have you heard about Cole’s Law? It’s thinly sliced cabbage.” The club’s reaction to the first joke of the day was luke-warm. President Lins is warming them up. “I also have a joke about chemistry, but I just don’t think it will get a reaction!” Chemistry was just right for this joke because it received a tremendous laugh, “I’m glad you liked that.”

On This Day, today in 1910 the Boy Scouts of America was incorporated. Also, today in 1922 President Warren G. Harding had a radio installed at the White House. Today, in 1952, Queen Elizabeth II proclaimed her accession to the British Throne following the death of her father, King George VI. Lastly, today in 1965 the Supremes’ record “Stop! In the Name of Love” was released by Barry Gordy’s Motown Records.

For our Commencement Ceremonies, Past President Jeff Hutchison gave us our Invocation. He asked for a moment of silence to all those that lost their lives in Turkey and Syria during the massive earthquake. “I pray for the best for them. I know that people are trying to help them all around the world” He asked members to bow their heads for a prayer. “Dear lord, we give you thanks for today. Thank you for the fellowship of Rotarians we have here. We ask that you give us the strength and resources to continue our support in our community and around the world. Let us serve those who are in need, we ask this in your name, Amen.”

Our Patriotic Moment was given to us by Fullerton College Journalism Intern, Gerardo Chagolla. He reminded us how blessed we are to live in the greatest country in the world. “The liberties and freedoms we are afforded because of Old Glory and the many military personnel that have risked their lives for it. As many of you know, I am a Journalism Major. And journalism is protected under the United States Constitution.” He grabbed his press pass and read it, “The Holder of this card is a member of The Hornet Newspaper and in pursuit of covering newsworthy events should be granted the courtesy of protections under the First Amendment of the United States.” Gerardo led the club in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Our Songmaster today was Randy McFarland, “a while back Joe invited up here to tell a joke. Well, this is the second time.” He told a Roy Rogers jokes that received well with the club. He led us in a song by Roy Rogers called, “Happy Trails.” It was a lot of fun! President Lins led the club in a Randy for president chant, “Randy for President. Randy! Randy! Randy!”

Today’s guest in attendance, Ernie Delfin introduced two guests. Past district governor in the Philippines and Igor kukhlevskyy from the Ukraine. He also took the time to promote his book and gift it to the club. President of Fullerton Rotary South Tim Hedrick was a guest in attendance today. Wilma Peloquin, guest of Bill Peloquin. Nicki Rogers, guest of Bailey Klein was in attendance today. Kendra Tankersly Davis with Crittenton Services for Children and Families. Dick Ackerman was a guest in attendance today.

Today we had a Vocational Moment with Jim Ripley. Over the weekend, Jim went to PETS, President Elect Training Services, and reported on how his training went to our club. “I guess I am officially qualified to be your president! It was a great program with fantastic speakers.” He shouted out Jim Vanderburg, “he was honored for his years in Rotary and the district. But also, he was the founded the PETS program. It was a pleasure to be with him.” Jim also got to meet Gordon McNalley, incoming Rotary International President. He reported that he attended many key classes to help with his leadership. He asked Joe if he took a conflict resolutions class, “I did take Joe’s suggestion and took the Dad Jokes class. But, ever since then, I keep getting calls. They cough, they sneeze, and they hang up! Is that a cold call?” Great Joke made in honor of President Joe Lins.

Ouwleen promotes the District Event

Today’s announcements, E-Waste event sponsored by CENTURY 21 Discovery and the North Orange County Chamber of Commerce on Saturday, February 18, 2023. Also, the 38th Annual Fullerton Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast, an annual event hosted by the Fullerton Mayor's Prayer Breakfast Committee. It is modeled after the National Prayer Breakfast held in Washington, D.C. Breakfast is from 6:45am - 7:30am, and program begins at 7:30am. “Fram Virjee is the guest speaker. This is not a political event. Fram is going to do a great job with that.” Dan Ouweleen announced how great the PETS training weekend was, “there is a great video of Jim Ripley dancing that I’ll make sure this club gets it so we can watch it next week.” Dan announced on April 8th, the Fullerton Rotary Club Chili Cook Off is coming back. “It’s going to be a little different. It’s not going to be at the baseball game like in the past. It’s going to be at the Santa Ana Zoo/Park. Our club competed in the last three and came in 3rd place.” It’s $20 for adults and $10 for children. Those who purchase Chili Cook Off ticket will also get free entrance to the zoo for the day. There will be a vendor fair for any non-profits. The price for a vendor booth is $100. He wants to see club members there. Last announcement by Dan was the District Training Assembly, which takes place March 11th and is the same day as the Track Meet that Rick Crane hosts every year. He encourages new members to go to be exposed to all the different topics and opportunities that Rotary has to offer. The event will take place at Chapman College. Rick Crane announced the 32nd annual Jim Thompson Track and Field City Championships, between Fullerton, Sunny Hills and Troy High Schools. “Past President Jim Thompson started this event 32 years ago. We are looking for volunteers to help out that morning. It is on Saturday March 11 at Fullerton Union High School.” It starts at 8 am and runs until 1 pm. There will be a barbeque and other exciting things for the competitors. “We need help for that day of the event. I would highly encourage new members that haven’t come to that event to help out. We feed the kids; we barbeque them. We don’t actually barbeque the kids.” He passed around a sign-up sheet for members to sign. Jordan Garcia announced the Fullerton YMCA Annual Campaign. “We are looking to raise $88,000 to support two things. Financial assistance to help families in need so they won’t be turned away. The second is to fund after school childcare programs.” Kendra Davis announced Crittenton Services along with 8 other non-profits are involved in a campaign called “Love Is.” “We are asking people to donate to our agency. Large or small amounts, all of these count. It is to support us in working with our adolescences on healthy relationships. Many of the kids we serve come from complex trauma as a result of a lot of abuse. They don’t know what a healthy relationship looks like.” Go to Crittentonsocal.org for more information.

Today’s Finemaster/Recognition Master, Past President Bob Sattler. “I always admired how you dress,” said President Lins to Bob. This is the second time Bob has been finemaster. “Last week I did the prayer. Please, pray for me this week,” he joked. He prefaced that he will be fining $2 but he may also give money back. “Farrell, you can also give money back, right? So, I got some dollar bills. If I tell you to give two dollars to somebody, please do it.” He recalled that some of the people that had anniversaries and birthday were fined last week. He recognized Dan Kiernan, “What is going on this week, Dan?” Dan is celebrating his 6oth wedding anniversary. For that, Bob gave him $6 back, “I’m not going to take money for 60 years wedding anniversary. To Ann, how could she last that long? I don’t know,” joked Bob. Rashawn Underdue was recognized for his 1-year Rotary Anniversary. He was fined $2. He congratulated President Joe Lins on interviewing North Orange County Director, Andrew Gregson, on his North Orange County Chamber Podcast. “I think you’ve got a potential second career as podcaster/announcer. You did a great job.” He recognized Carol Morris for jumping in all the way. She received $2 for committing to Rotary. He recognized Beverly Berryman and gave her $2 for all the hard work she does. “I think I am getting this whole fining this all backwards.” Judy Atwell, Sally Williams, and Miko Krisvoy were recognized for their hard work in throwing all the parties together with the decorations. He gave them all $2. “Somebody else I am going to give $2. I am talking about Gerardo. He has been doing the photos and the rootogram. I don’t know if you’ve seen the rootogram, since the beginning of the year. It’s almost word by word. Everything that goes on in the meeting, if you missed a meeting, Gerardo has you covered. Great Job Gerardo.” A fun part of his finemaster segment was when he put members official Rotary Club photos on display versus how they look now. He fined Dan K. $2 from the $6 he gave him earlier for catfishing with his profile photo. “Scott Dowds, how did you get a flat top?” joked Bob. He finished with trivia and fun facts. Great Job Bob Sattler!

Christian takes the Stage

Our Program at Hand today, Joya Scholars Review with Christian Esteban. Christian thanked everyone for having him as the speaker. He recalls when he and his wife found out they were having a baby, “at that time we had about 15 girl names and zero boy names. We are having a boy, but we still don’t have a name picked out.” Someone from the audience suggested Zoot as a name. This mysterious individual was thanked but Christian wants the highest bidder instead. He shared information on Joya Scholars and personal information in his presentation. Christian started at Joya Scholars as a volunteer 8 years ago and today he announced that he will step down as the Executive Director role, a position he worked very hard to achieve. He shared what his next journey in life will look like. He is deciding to stay in the non-profit world. “I am going to be moving to North Anaheim and work with the neighborhood there. Working on a new non-profit project incubator program.” It will be in partnership with the City of Anaheim. It is a building in Anaheim, which was the original Northgate Gonzalez Market. They are turning it into something that will benefit the community. A community facing culinary incubator lab. He will be project manager and leading it for the next two years, hoping for a 2024-25 opening. There will be 3 program pillars: workforce development through culinary training, entrepreneurship, and last will be community health and wellness. He will continue with Joya as a volunteer and will continue to be around Fullerton Rotary Club but will transfer his credentials over to Anaheim Rotary Club, “I am still going to make it a point to come out here frequently as a visiting Rotarian. I was told I can’t hold dual memberships. Truth be told, I’ve come to know so many of you. I’ve come to admire and respect several of you.” Stepping in for Christian at Joyas Scholars as Executive Director, will be guest, Giselle Monterrosas. He showcased Joyas Scholars kids achievements with the club. “When you think of Joyas Scholars, this is an image that I would love to kind of share with all. A wonderful group of kids that really good at letting their guard down and letting you in to their world.” He shared personal information about himself to the club. Christian is originally from Modesto, California. He grew up in a beautiful home in a wonderful neighborhood but remembers that from his neighborhood, he could see Juvenile Detention Center. The upside to that was that he could also see the local junior college, Modesto Junior College. He remembers not knowing what college or university was. His family immigrated to the central valley from Mexico. His grandfather was in search of the American dream and attained it through farm work which he was able to provide his family a better life. Christian’s mom graduated high school and worked as an Office Manager for an OB/GYN doctor. His father was a high school football star who joined the Army Reserve for 8 years. After the reserve, his father worked for Gallo Glass Refinery in Modesto for 15 years and for the last 15 years, he has been a forklift driver. He says he got lucky because of his mentor, his 11th grade history teacher Mr. Peterson who taught him 3 lessons he uses to work with students from Joyas Scholars. Lesson number one, a textbook informs a learner, but a relationship informs a leader. Lesson number two, a mentor is what his student becomes. Lesson number three, be Toto from The Wizard of Oz. Joyas Scholars believes that every student should have all the resources they need to succeed in high school, graduate from college, build a path to a fulfilling career and become a community leader. Joyas Scholars is committed to bringing in the right people to have the right conversation with the students at the right time, and through that, help their students rewrite the narrative in their lives. Like Pixar, Joyas Scholars helps their students figure out how they’re going to get there through multiple programs offered. Christian introduced his successor, Giselle Monterrosas. Giselle is 23 years old and a Joyas Scholars alumni who will now serve as Executive Director for Joyas Scholars and is a Fullerton Rotary Club prospective member. She is also Vice President of a non-profit in Santa Ana called Grupo Versage. Their main focus is young Latina girls from the ages of 3 to 18. They help build up their confidence and self-esteem through modeling and pageantry and appreciate their Hispanic backgrounds. She video hosts for The Fullerton Observer Newspaper, something she recently started with. In addition to all that, she is also a fitness trainer at a fitness studio. Giselle is a first generation college attendee and she credits her mentor Megan Choi who encouraged her in joining Joyas Scholars’ College Preparedness Program. She attended California State University, Monterey Bay where she received her Bachelor’s of the Arts Degree in Human Communications with a concentration in Journalism and Media Studies. She thanked everyone in attendance for being awesome community leaders and finished off with a quote, “nobody has time to be a leader. Everybody has the heart to be a leader.” President Lins awarded Christian Esteban with the highly coveted speakers’ gift, “we’re going to miss you. We do expect to see you in here. And for those that have gotten to know you, you are a champion. His style of leadership is incredible. Thank you, sir.”

Last thing on the agenda was the 50/50 drawing for some money. Ticket holder number 6369714, Carol Morris wins! For the 2 gift certificates to The Muck, courtesy of Farrell Hirsch, 6369722, Judy Atwell wins one. 6369727, Patrick Hartnett wins the second certificate. Bill Peloquin was awarded a Gucci Fighter Plane from Dan Ouweleen for being the number one giver to the Rotary Big Foundation. Monthly Board Meeting is next Wednesday February 15, 2023, at 10:45, anyone can attend. “Thank you for coming today, next week is a report on the plan of action for the Uncorked Event. Thanks again for coming today and we will see you next week. Charge On! Meeting Adjourned.”
