Volume 67, Issue 11   Rota-Scribe: Randy McFarland

President Tom Meyer opened the meeting with his traditional phrase, “Welcome to THE Rotary  Club of Fullerton!” and actually received an enthusiastic response from the assembled members on his first prompt, so he promptly prompted Theresa Harvey to prompt us to say the Pledge of Allegiance.

Song master and Sgt.-at-Arms Howard Wood (with Don Ludwig at the piano) led us in “Oh, What a Beautiful Morning” and surprisingly, we didn’t break into a spontaneous “ second verse (as occurred a couple of weeks ago).

Reverend Leroy Fulton led us in prayer immediately after the singing (to seek forgiveness?).    John Phelps did introductions of Patrick Hartnett, Clare McKenna, Kimberly Nguyen, and Theresa Hillhouse.

Reverend Greg Hickman ran Recognitions like a revival meeting/exercise class. The “First Church of Positive Confessions of Fullerton” was  inspired to it’s feet at least twice while pledging to pay significant fines for their transgressions. Reviving last week’s thought of the day “If you knew how powerful thoughts were, you wouldn’t have any negative thoughts”, Greg ran with the theme with no negative recognitions.

In reverence for our fearless leader, Prez Tom was the first to be recognized for the great job he’s doing

Opportunity Drawing- Bill Hite’s ticket was drawn giving him the opportunity to pull one of two Jokers, but received $10. instead from George Giokaris.

Program- We were fortunate to have two craft talks by new members, Bob Hillhouse and Diedre Kinsey.

Bob’s aptitude for math encouraged him to get into engineering and then accounting landing a positon at the IRS where he won a certificate and a bonus for helping the IRS procure an additional one million dollars. Bob served on the board for the Fullerton Chamber of Commerce and was sponsored by Bill Peloquin into Rotary.

He got heavily involved with some space agencies and on one trip was in a chase plane trying to spot the falling Mirr space station in 2001 only to find that he should have stayed on the resort island, Fiji to have a chance of seeing it. He showed us a signed photograph of a Who’s Who of Russian cosmonauts.  Our adventurer concluded his talk with stories of some of his mountain climbing forays some of which resulted in fractures and scrapes.

Diedre as a youth, enjoyed sports like soccer, softball and volleyball and divulged that she has more fun than her brunette twin sister. She attended Ohio University in Athens, Ohio which is famous for it’s Halloween Festival. She earned her degree in Health Services Administration, and works with Life Care Services in several positions around the country, specializing in helping convalescent facilities in financial difficulty. Ray Hansen’s persistence won her over to join Rotary and the most recent highlight of her life was the birth of her daughter last year. She’s very pleased to be a part of our club as we are please to have her and Bob be a part of the club.

Thought For the Day: “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.”
