Happy 85th Birthday to the Best Club in Town!

President Tom opened the glorious day with a request to Fred Johnson to lead us in the Flag Salute. Fred was promptly followed by the Howard Wood Strollers, including Randy McFarland, Maryalyce Jeremiah, Bill Peloquin, Ray Ashcroft and Don Ludwig on the keyboard. The entertained us with a “Smile” and “Moon Shine.” (Or, was that “Shine on Harvest Moon” we heard?) The blessing on Rotary and this club was invoked by Ray Hansen.
Guests:
Thank you Bill Klinghoffer, for introducing all the visiting Rotarians and guests. Included in that auspicious list were 13 visitors from Rotary South, 5 from Rotary Sunrise, Rotary wives included were Doris Wood, Robyn Mathy, Pat Lenahan, Gloria Radde, Dottie Young-Harris, Beth Jahncke, Beverly Bates, Adrienne Barnes, our newest Robin Hartnett, and son Bill McGarvey III. Also present were Steve Awh, Kimberly Nguyen, Nina Visconti and Jerry Marquez. Welcome to all!

Announcements:

  1. Thank you all who provided me with written data for the announcements found below! As Roto-gram editor, it is a pleasure not to have to try to get it all correctly relayed from the verbal announcements. 
  2. October 26, 2007 – Free Movie! See Buster Keaton in “Steamboat Bill” at the Wilshire Auditorium beginning at 6:00 p.m. This is sponsored by the Fullerton College Alumni Association. For information contact Wendy Baily at (714) 992-7000, ext. 25005.
  3. November 30, 2007 – The Fullerton Rotary Holiday Sock Hop! Rock out to the tunes of the 40’s & 50’s at the Boys & Girls Club Gym! BBQ Dinner, drinks and a chance to sponsor gifts for needy children are all included at a cost of $25 ($15 if you bring an unwrapped gift) and $10 for Students. Call Fred Johnson at (714) 871-1391, ext 1001 for tickets.
  4. December 17, 2007 – Fellowship and Fun at the Huntington Harbor Light Parade. Dinner starts at 5:00 p.m. with the parade beginning at 7:00 p.m. at Peters Landing. Contact Dick Daybell at (714) 801-7319 to sign-up. The event cost is $12.50 and will be billed to you.
New Member Induction:
It was with pleasure that we were able to induct two new members to our wonderful club at our 85th Birthday Meeting! They were Patrick Hartnett who was sponsored by President Tom and Mitch Hovey, sponsored by Minard Duncan. We welcome you both and can’t wait for a chance to know you well!
Fines:
Nate Kvetney the “Sage of Tel Aviv” unilaterally fined all with birthdays, anniversaries and special days $85 each. Based on the honor system they were all to send their checks to cover Finemaster Nate’s assessments. As best recorded they included Dianne Masseth-Jones’ anniversary of 29 years, Dean Heiser for his wife’s birthday reminder, Vern Andrews for his 48th wedding anniversary, Rick Crane for being a year older than Vern Minard Duncan for being old enough to have a great-grandson, and finally Dan Fisk who requested that his fine be waived because his daughter got married last weekend.
Raffle:
The Raffle was won by Theresa Harvey who did not draw a joker, however she was consoled with $10 from Terri Grassi. Next week $130 is up for grabs!
Program:
First and foremost a huge thank you needs to go to Terri Grassi for directing this program on behalf of the club! A second goes to Sandy Hayes, Randy McFarland and Terri for doing such a wonderful job obtaining and displaying some of our wonderful artifacts! Featured speakers were Jim Young, Bill Lenahan, Jim Vanderburg, Allan Bridgeford and Les Christensen. Among the memories shared were discussions about Paul Harris, various projects completed including 46 years of Top 100 Banquets, 30 years of Senior Christmas Banquets, 20 years of Fullerton Track Meets, $200,000 to build the Girls Club on Richman, $324,000 raised in our 18 years of Concerts, sponsorship of 5 Rotary Clubs and 2 Interact Clubs, 4 District Governors, Polio Plus, Pennies for Polio, and especially all the Service and Fellowship!
Membership pins were given to Andy Anderson for 42 years, Jim Vanderburg for 45 years, Lee Myhre for 47 years, Bob Ruhe for 47 years, Chet Schultz for 48 years, Bill McGarvey for 48 years, Allan Bridgeford for 50 years, Ray Hansen for 50 years, Bill Lenahan for 54 years, Les Christiansen for 55 years, Hilton Dalessi for 55 years, Roy Harvill for 56 years and Bill Camp for 57 years of wonderful Service!
Lee Myhre and Dave Bates were recognized for 47 and 36 years of prefect attendance respectively!
Presentations were made by Mike Oates with an 85 year anniversary plaque from Korea and a Senate Certificate of Recognition by Stan Magassi.
