President Tom Meyer opened the meeting as scheduled just as we were shoving more food in our mouths and called us to somewhat order.
Pledge: Ken Kaisch, minus the clown nose, led us in the Pledge to The United States of America. Sing a Song: Howard Wood and his entourage led us in song about Saints marching around and trumpets sounding calls and how I want to be in that number, followed by our own rendition of “SMILE”. Prayer: Mike Oates did a great job asking for blessings on Rotary Leadership and guidance for all of us as we mentor and lead the young folks in the world. Introductions: Mr. Fred Johnson passed the mike around so our guests would be recognized. Jim Vanderburg introduced his lovely wife Willa. Rae Shirer from Orange Sunrise joined us on her own, Ted Russell from Announcements: Maryalyce Jeremiah said the “F” word (Football) and how happy she was that Titan Basketball is back on the court and encouraged us all to freely join “the Herd” as their goal is to have a free membership drive concluding with 200 people. Mark Geiss announced our annual Senior Christmas party at the Ebell club. Santa will be there on December 12 and is encouraging all of us to participate in the festivities as this is the only time some of these folks get outside of their facility. Dick Daybell corrected the date of the Annual Huntington Harbor Christmas Parade. The event is scheduled for December 17, signups are being passed around the lunch tables. While he was at it he asked about Fellowship Dinners as opposed to lunches. Your response and feedback to Dick would be greatly appreciated. Allyn Lean is our new Rotary Foundation Chair. He introduced Rae Shirer wdo asked for our participation in the Foundation District Dinner scheduled for November 17 honoring 8 new Paul Harris Fellows from our club! President Tom let us know that there is a board meeting next Tuesday morning… Recognition Master: Dan (the man) Kiernan who immediately went off on Tom Meyer for being disrespectful to Dan. I think it was because Tom was looking him in the eye while not having to stand to accomplish that task. Anyway, $100 was levied. Nate Kvetny had the unpleasant task of sharing a table with Dan and was hit for $100, after asking why it was immediately increased to $200. Nate gave up. He then went after me, Joe Lins, for $100, I told him I was busy writing the Rotogram and asked to be left alone. Dan then moved his attention to Dick Daybell who borrowed a pen, that cost him $50. Things were moving fast and furious (madly) and $50 was painfully attached to Bob Jahncke for reasons unknown as I found myself not being able to write as fast as Dan could take money from good Rotarians. Bob, AKA Bab, was fined for no fault of his own as the Orange County Register recognized his alias, Bab Sattler for completing a transaction and being recognized in the paper. Congratulations Bob, good real estate news makes the Register gag. Jeff Hutchison and Wally Bartelt were both hit for $50, again, Dan just so excited and going faster that I can keep up. Next thing I know little Dan is going after Phil Silverman for not doing his job by giving poor Dan the information list, Phil made the mistake of letting him know it was on the web and that cost him $50! Meanwhile Keith Mills is trying to give his thoughts while not being noticed and the evil ear of Dan hits him upside the head with another fifty bucks. Wally Bartelt wants to address the floor only to be recognized with another $50. Finally Dan was able to come up with some legitimate information allowing Scott Dowds to brag about his daughter who graduated from the Air Force Acadamy and has opted for flight school beginning in January. Now that was a fine Scott would gladly pay, $50. Jim Vanderburg and his wife Willa were Recognized for their work on the old Downtown clock that was blown down in the recent winds. The article in the paper was reason for a reasonable $10. Dan then asked that anyone who had a birthday or annivarsary in the past week to stand and pay $50 for the privilege. Bill Kincaid bravely announced 57 years of wedded bliss and was promptly rewarded with a $57 fine. Dick and Jane Mathewson recently celebrated 23 years and Dan, for whatever reason, issued no fine. Lastly on the agenda, Bill McGarvey celebrated his 86 birthday on November 5 and Dan wisely refused to fine McGarvey who has been a part of our club since 1959. Long day from a short guy in long pants! I counted $867 total - but I may have missed a couple!! |
Raffle Drawing: Chet Schultz had the lucky number and pulled an 8 of diamonds instead of the Joker. More money next week.
Craft Talk Sandy Hayes and Jim Vanderburg gave a joint talk and let us know that There was not a lot of money while they were growing up and if they needed something extra they would have to get creative. One year at Christmas the boys came up with the idea of making mistletoe boquets and having the girls in the family go out ans sell them. Well that worked out fine until their dad found out that the boys kept the money. He sooned evened out the score and the girls received 25 cents each for their portion. Dad had some rules for his family to live by. Love Mom. Don’t talk back and no wining. Dad worked very hard and they all loved to read. If you were part of their family you had to learn how to do the chores. All of them. The girls new how to mow the lawn and the boys new how to do laundry, an equal opportunity household to say the least. One of the mottos was, if you don’t do your job someone else will suffer! Sandy let us know how she loved to play tennis, be part of church groups and Jobs Daughters where she learned leadership. She proceeded to go through all stages and capped it all off by becoming the Honored Queen. Sandy wanted to become an elementary school teacher and camp in the summer. While attending When their youngest son went into first grade it was then she took two classes per semester and graduated with a Bachelors Degree in ten years. She found her true passion in Art allowing her to persue Interior Design as a business. She and Jack had a 5year plan and a 10 year plan. They worked together and bought a building on Chapman and served on National Committees to compliment the business plan she and Jack shared. Eventually they closed that business so that she could move to Jim met Willa when they were 16 and 15 while in High School and have been married for 50 years. They have 3 sons and 6 grandchildren It was in 1961 with $250 in their pocket and the wealth of a hope and a dream they purchased Crown Printing. As Jim says, he had 16 tons of debt and decided to target 10 companies with who he wanted to do business with and put together a creative marketing plan to make that happen. Dan McBride sponsored Jim when he joined Rotary in 1962 and Allen Bridgford sponsored him in Fullerton Rotary. Jimmy, as his mom always called him, is especially thankful to Jim Young for all he has done for our club. He wanted us to know how proud he is of his little sister, Jim and Sandy, thanks for letting us get to know you by sharing your life with us. Health Report: Jim Blake has been moved to the third floor at St. Jude. He has been up and is in need of your continued thought and prayers. Thanks: Bill Klinghoffer, I am most appreciative of you for picking up my reading glasses that I left behind. After much panic on my part my heart was warmed when you stopped by my office and dropped them off. You are an awesome Rotarian. Thank You from Joe Lins. Closing Thought: Happiness is found along the way and not at the end of the road…
